How to rank in Google's AI Overviews

AI Search (GEO)effort Mimpact 3/5

An AI Overview is not a second ranking system stacked on top of Google. It is a summary written out of pages that are already in the index, and Google's own documentation sets no extra technical bar for being used in one: be indexed, be eligible for snippets, and you are a candidate.

What decides the rest is position and phrasing. Overviews draw on pages that already rank respectably, and they quote passages that answer the question without help from the sentences around them. Your pages sitting at positions 4 to 15 are the ones worth the work — close enough to be reached for, far enough down that the click was not coming anyway.

There is a cost baked into the format, and it is worth naming. Where an Overview appears, click-through on the first ordinary result falls hard; Ahrefs measured the drop across 300,000 keywords. Being named inside the box is what is left to win.

What you get

Your pages ranking 4-15 restructured so the AI Overview can quote them, using the controls Google documents rather than any special markup.

Steps

  1. In Search Console, open Performance, filter to queries at average positions 4 to 15, and export the list.
  2. Google each query in a clean window and record two things: does an AI Overview appear, and which sources does it cite. Informational who/what/why queries trigger it most.
  3. Keep the queries where an Overview appears and you already sit on page one or two; those are the winnable ones.
  4. On each kept page, rewrite the section that matches the query so its first sentence is the complete answer, self-contained enough to quote alone.
  5. Add two statistics with named sources inside that same passage, so the quotable part carries its own proof.
  6. Check you allow snippets: no nosnippet, no data-nosnippet around the answer passage, no restrictive max-snippet. Google's AI-features documentation names these as the controls, and states a page needs only to be indexed and snippet-eligible: "There are no additional technical requirements."
  7. Keep a visible last-updated date on the page and change it only when the content changes.
  8. Request reindexing of each edited page in Search Console (URL Inspection, then Request indexing).

How to verify it worked

  • Re-run the queries in a clean window after two to four weeks and record whether the Overview now cites your page.
  • Watch impressions for the edited pages in Search Console's Performance report; Google reports AI Overview traffic inside the Web search type, with no separate toggle.

Why it works

You cannot buy inclusion and there is no markup for it. Three levers are left, and all three are yours to set: where the page already ranks, whether one passage answers the query on its own, and whether you have quietly told Google not to quote you.

Evidence

Google's "AI features and your website" documentation (reviewed 2026-09-01): being indexed and snippet-eligible is the whole precondition, and nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet govern what AI features may quote.

Ahrefs, 300,000 keywords: an AI Overview cuts position-one CTR by about 58 percent where it appears.

The Princeton GEO study ("GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", KDD 2024) measured a 30-to-40-percent AI-visibility lift from adding statistics, named sources and quotes; pages near position five gained most.
