How to get your site cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews
An assistant answering a question does not rank pages against each other. It retrieves a handful, reads them, writes a paragraph, and puts a few citations underneath. The pages that survive that process are the ones it could lift a clean, checkable claim out of.
That is a different qualification from ranking, and the two come apart more often than not: most of the URLs ChatGPT and Perplexity cite are not in Google's top ten at all. A page that never reached the first results page can still be the source an answer names.
So this is not a campaign. It is one page, rewritten until the answer stands at the top of it in a form a stranger could quote, and a re-ask every fortnight, because citations move in weeks where rankings move in months.
What you get
One page reshaped so assistants can quote it, plus a fortnightly check on whether ChatGPT and AI Overviews have started citing you.
Steps
- Pick the one page whose question you most want to be the answer to. Write a direct, factual answer into its first 150 words, complete enough to stand on its own if it were lifted out.
- Back that answer with at least two statistics, each attributed to a named source, so the claim can be checked without leaving the passage.
- Add one short quote from a named person with stated credentials.
- Define the page's key entities, such as the product and the metric, in plain sentences near the top; a model that cannot tell what the page is about will not reach for it.
- Put a visible last-updated date on the page, and change it only when the content changes.
- Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools (bing.com/webmasters), and check that robots.txt is not blocking bingbot or GPTBot; ChatGPT's browsing runs on Bing's index, so a page missing there is missing from the answer.
- Re-ask your target question in fresh assistant sessions every two weeks and log whether you appear. A fortnight is long enough to read, because citation changes arrive much faster than ranking changes.
How to verify it worked
- Ask the target question in a fresh ChatGPT session with no history, and in Google with AI Overviews visible. Record whether your domain appears among the citations.
- Search Bing for site:yourdomain.com/your-page. If the page is not in that index, ChatGPT is not browsing it.
Why it works
A retrieval step needs a passage it can take whole, without carrying the paragraph before it and the one after. Named sources and a visible date are what let a model check the claim cheaply; the entity definitions are what let it match your page to a question worded nothing like your title. None of it is a ranking factor, and that is the point.
Evidence
The Princeton-led GEO study ("GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", KDD 2024) ran 10,000 queries and measured a 30-to-40-percent visibility lift in AI answers for pages that added statistics, named sources and expert quotes; pages sitting around position five gained up to 115 percent.
Ahrefs crawl data: 12 percent of the URLs cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity rank in Google's top ten, and 80 percent rank outside the top 100.
