Perplexity SEO: mine its citations, then become one
Perplexity prints its retrieval layer. Under each answer sits a panel of numbered chips, and every chip is a page the engine pulled and used to write what you just read. No other search product hands you its candidate set.
Ask the same question again in a new thread and part of that panel changes while part of it does not. The part that repeats is what Perplexity reaches for on that question: a short, specific list of the sources deciding the answer in your niche.
Sort that list into two piles — sources you can join, such as directories, review sites and forums, and sources you would have to outdo, such as somebody else's blog post. Working the two piles is keyword research and link prospecting in one pass, against a citation pool that classic rankings barely gatekeep.
What you get
A prospect list built from the sources Perplexity already trusts in your niche, plus one page of yours shaped into the format it cites.
Steps
- Ask Perplexity the five questions buyers ask before choosing you, one per thread.
- For each answer, open the sources panel (the numbered citation chips) and copy every cited URL into a sheet.
- Ask each question again in a new thread and keep only the sources that appear both times; those are the stable ones.
- Tag each stable source: joinable (a directory, review site or forum you can be listed in) or replaceable (a blog post or listicle you would have to outdo).
- Get listed in every joinable source, free listings first; run the domain through Ahrefs' free backlink checker (ahrefs.com/backlink-checker) before paying anyone anything.
- Pick one replaceable source and publish a page in the same format with fresher data and a cleaner structure: answer first, statistics with named sources, a visible date.
- Check robots.txt allows PerplexityBot; Perplexity's crawler documentation says it exists to surface sites in results and is not a training crawler.
- Re-ask the five questions in two weeks and log which citations changed.
How to verify it worked
- Your domain appears in the citation chips for at least one of the five questions in a fresh thread.
- Your server logs (or CDN analytics) show PerplexityBot/1.0 hits after you allowed it.
Why it works
Two threads is the whole filter. Retrieval varies run to run, so a source cited once may be noise, while a source cited both times is a standing dependency of that answer — and that is the short list your outreach hours belong to.
Evidence
Practitioner report, 2026-07: building outreach prospect lists directly from Perplexity citation panels, treating each recurring citation as a target.
Ahrefs: 12 percent of AI-cited URLs rank in Google's top ten and 80 percent rank outside the top 100 — the citation pool is open to pages that never won rankings.
Perplexity's crawler documentation (reviewed 2026-09-01): PerplexityBot surfaces sites in search results; Perplexity-User fetches pages on user request and generally ignores robots.txt.
