Reddit keyword research: mine the questions tools report as zero
A keyword tool reports volume by counting searches that already happened. A question phrased in a way nobody has typed much yet has no history to count, so it comes back as zero — and zero is what an unserved question looks like shortly before it becomes a page nobody else wrote.
Reddit records those questions in the words people use, months ahead of the tools. Google now ranks the threads for many of them, which does two useful things at once: it proves the demand is real, and it shows you the bar, because ten people answering from experience is what your page has to beat.
The rest is collection. Fifty post titles per subreddit, the exact phrasings into a sheet, and a free alert that keeps the sheet filling itself while you write.
What you get
A keyword list phrased the way people actually ask, mined from your niche's subreddits, plus free alerts when the questions recur.
Steps
- List three to five subreddits where your buyers actually post (search reddit.com/subreddits for your niche terms).
- Sort each subreddit by Top, then This Year, and read the top 50 post titles; the ones that rose are the questions the subreddit keeps having.
- Copy every recurring question phrasing into a sheet, in the exact words used.
- In Google, search site:reddit.com/r/[subreddit] "how do I" [topic] to find the question threads that rank — a ranking thread is proof of search demand.
- Check each phrase in Google Keyword Planner for volume and Ahrefs' free keyword difficulty checker (ahrefs.com/keyword-difficulty) for difficulty, and keep the zero-volume ones anyway when the thread has 20+ comments; volume tools under-report long-tail questions.
- Set up F5Bot (f5bot.com — free at review time) with your keywords; it emails you new Reddit and Hacker News mentions within minutes.
- Write pages that answer the exact thread question in the thread's own vocabulary, with the answer in the first paragraph.
- Where you genuinely add value, answer in the live threads too — with an aged account, a disclosure, and no link drops in moderated subreddits.
How to verify it worked
- Search Console shows impressions for the harvested phrasings within weeks.
- F5Bot emails arrive for your keywords, giving you a running feed of new question threads.
Why it works
Keep the zero-volume phrasings when the thread behind them has real discussion. The reported number is a floor rather than a measurement, and twenty people arguing under a post is evidence the tool does not have.
