Fix "Crawled — currently not indexed"
"Crawled — currently not indexed" is not an error message. Google fetched the page, read it, and decided not to store it. Search Central documents the state in those terms: crawled, not indexed, may or may not be indexed later.
Reading it as a verdict rather than a bug changes what you do next. Requesting indexing again asks the same question and collects the same answer. What moves a page is giving Google a reason to decide differently: something on it that no other page has, or enough internal links from indexed pages to say this one matters.
Much of the list usually belongs where it is. Parameter URLs, tag archives and thin variants are pages Google is right to skip, and the fix for them is to stop offering them.
What you get
A diagnosis path for pages stuck in "Crawled — currently not indexed", plus the fix sequence that moves them into the index, or shows you they never will.
Steps
- In Search Console, open Indexing, then Pages, then the "Crawled — currently not indexed" row, and export the URL list.
- Triage the list into junk and real pages. Parameter URLs, tag archives and thin variants belong out of the index; exclude them (noindex, canonical, or robots) and stop there — Google skipping junk is correct behavior, not a problem.
- For each real page, run URL Inspection and compare the Google-selected canonical with your declared one; a mismatch means Google sees the page as a duplicate, and the fix is differentiation, not resubmission.
- Read the page against what already ranks for its query. If it adds nothing unique, no technical fix will index it; add the thing only you have — data, firsthand detail, a genuinely better answer.
- Add three or more internal links to the page from indexed, high-impression pages, with descriptive anchors.
- Confirm the URL sits in your sitemap with an honest lastmod, and resubmit the sitemap.
- Request indexing via URL Inspection, knowing what it is: a request. Recrawling can take days to weeks, and there is no guarantee.
- Optionally ping Bing via IndexNow (indexnow.org — key file in your site root, then one GET per URL). Google is not an IndexNow participant, but Bing feeds ChatGPT browsing, so the ping buys AI-search presence.
- Re-check the Pages report in two to four weeks.
How to verify it worked
- The URL count in "Crawled — currently not indexed" falls in the Pages report over two to four weeks.
- URL Inspection shows the fixed pages as indexed, and site:yourdomain.com/the-url returns the page.
Why it works
The honest half of this play is knowing when to stop. A page that stays out after you have genuinely improved it is telling you something about the site rather than the page — the answer then is fewer thin pages and more links to the domain, and publishing more before that only spends into the same verdict.
Evidence
Google Search Central's Page indexing documentation defines the state as a deliberate choice: crawled, not indexed, may or may not be indexed later — no error to fix, a decision to change.
Ahrefs, one million new URLs: 1.74 percent reach the top ten within a year, and 40.8 percent of those arrive within a month — the honest timeline behind the patience this play asks for.
